I’ve spent the last couple of weeks getting ready for sub-freezing temperatures here in the South Valley. The first frost is expected Thursday night. Above, I’ve moved all of our tropical ornamental plants inside my ten by ten-foot greenhouse, including the our 40-year-old hibiscus plants. In the lower right of the photo, that’s my nearly three-year-old Barrackapore superhot chile plant.
- Also in the greenhouse are potted basil and Italian parsley plants so we can have fresh herbs all winter.
- As an experiment, I built a mini-greenhouse where I planted radishes, beets, chard and lettuce. At night I’ll use an infrared heat lamp to keep the temps above freezing.
- I’ll open the mini-greenhouse each day when the temp outside is above freezing. You can see that I’ve got radishes growing now.
