Spotting of the Month: Spotted Towhee

Here’s another bird named after its call, like the Killdeer. This handsome bird, about 7 1/2 inches long, is closely .related to sparrows and lives in the undergrowth of cottonwood forests (Bosque) along rivers in the Southwest. In warm weather it eats a wide variety of insects and worms; in cold weather it moves onto seeds and berries. They spend a lot of time on the ground scratching around in their search for food and nesting there, too. Its primary enemy is the Cooper’s hawk, which lives in the same environment.
